Optically Diffusive White Backpaint

Page history last edited by Art Sandoval 3 years, 11 months ago
ASK
All--looking for the right paint to experiment with for prototyping that helps diffuse LED hotspots. Would want to be able to spec it in production, but more immediately, order some to experiment with in prototyping.

I imagine it is a whitish translucent coating. Guessing with titanium oxide.

It will be applied to a polycarbonate part that itself is also translucent white.

Any leads?

Hey Art,

Prototyping...maybe one of the spray on diffusers?

This looks kind of promising:

Tons of DIY hacks out there, but I'd probably ask a manufacturer or lighting CM what options they have. As usual, this can't be the first time this has been solved!

Assuming it's not a flat part? I've used 3M film with good luck in the past, took it to a production design with relief cuts.

Ary,

Suggest reaching out to PPG in US,...they did all our paints for Apple, Palm back in the day,...

Hey Art,

For the Motiv ring we dropped a tiny piece of translucent white silicone into the LED pocket and that did a great job to diffuse the light in the 2-shot part with clear window.
