The San Francisco Chapter has projects going on in Tanzania, Haiti, and Sri Lanka around sustainable architecture, solar panel installation, water pumping, etc. There is also an "Appropriate Technology Design Team" working on fuel-efficient cookstoves for refugees in Darfur and wind turbines for power generation in rural Guatemala. The team is led by two Stanford alumni, Heather Fleming (h.phlegming@gmail.com) and Francis Doumet (fdoumet@gmail.com).

“The class is taught by one of my favorite professors ever, James Patell from the GSB... David Kelly initially co-taught the class as well but that torch was predominantly passed last year to my good friend and extremely talented guy Adam French, although I'm not sure of his involvement this year. Couldn't recommend the class more highly.”

“This year the class will be co-taught by Sarah Stein-Greenberg, an equally talented individual. In fact, the water pump she designed for the class last year is currently in production and is doing very well. Great class, it made me want to come to Stanford.”

  • UCLA used to have a program called Design for Developing Nations. The professor…was one of Bob McKim's professors, but that was 15 years ago and I'm not sure if the program still exists, but it was a very interesting program at the time.”
